Trump signs executive order to propel US AI leadership

US President Donald Trump signed a new executive order to establish the United States as the ‘world capital in artificial intelligence.’

This order sets a 180-day deadline for creating an Artificial Intelligence Action Plan designed to sustain and enhance America’s dominance in the AI sector, promoting human flourishing, economic competitiveness, and national security.

The executive order represents a significant shift in policy, as it revokes previous regulations implemented by former President Joe Biden that were intended to mitigate risks associated with AI technologies. Trump’s administration criticized Biden’s 2023 executive order for imposing what they described as “unnecessarily burdensome requirements” on AI developers, which they argued could stifle innovation and threaten U.S. technological leadership.

In his remarks, Trump emphasized the need for AI systems to be developed free from “ideological bias or engineered social agendas,” a stance that aligns with broader Republican concerns regarding perceived “woke” policies in technology regulation. The new order mandates a review of all policies and regulations enacted under Biden’s directive, aiming to eliminate any barriers to American AI innovation.

Additionally, Trump has appointed David Sacks, a venture capitalist and former PayPal executive, as his Special Advisor for AI and Crypto. Sacks will lead efforts to coordinate with various government agencies on the implementation of this new AI strategy.

This executive action follows Trump’s earlier decision to revoke Biden’s 2023 order that required developers of high-risk AI systems to share safety test results with the government before public release. The Biden administration’s measures were designed to address potential harms to consumers and national security.

As part of this initiative, Trump’s administration is positioning itself to reshape the regulatory landscape surrounding AI technologies in the U.S., aiming for a more laissez-faire approach that proponents believe will foster innovation and maintain global leadership in artificial intelligence.
