Japan’s transport ministry is taking action against Toyota Industries, a major affiliate of Toyota Motor Corp, for manipulating engine emissions tests.
The ministry may even revoke certification for some engine types used in the company’s products.
This follows Toyota Industries self-reporting the misconduct in January, which involved tampering with performance data for engines used in forklifts, cars, and even popular models like the Land Cruiser and HiAce van.
The severity of the penalty will depend on the extent of the manipulation. At the minimum, Toyota Industries will be required to implement measures to prevent future occurrences. However, they might lose certification for specific engines, impacting production and sales.
Toyota has yet to comment on the situation. This news comes as a blow to the company’s reputation, raising concerns about the reliability and environmental impact of its products. It remains to be seen how they will address this issue and regain public trust.
