Sucker Punch announces ‘Ghost of Yōtei’, sequel to ‘Ghost of Tsushima’

Sucker Punch announces ‘Ghost of Yōtei’, sequel to ‘Ghost of Tsushima’

September 26, 2024

During Sony’s recent ‘State of Play’ presentation, Sucker Punch Productions officially unveiled Ghost of Yōtei, the much-anticipated sequel to Ghost of Tsushima.

The game, set to launch in 2025, introduces a new protagonist, Atsu, and moves the action away from Tsushima Island to a new setting—Mount Yōtei in the wilderness of what is now Hokkaido.

Set in 1603, three centuries after the original game’s events, Ghost of Yōtei promises to expand on the samurai lore that captivated players in 2020 while introducing a less structured and more untamed world.

Unlike the previous title, which centered around the warrior clans of Tsushima, the sequel’s setting focuses on the raw, untamed environment far removed from the strict order of samurai society. Atsu, the new character, continues the legacy of the ‘Ghost,’ balancing stealth, honor, and vengeance, all central themes to the series.

Sucker Punch’s team emphasized innovation in the game’s development. “We wanted to create something fresh but familiar,” they wrote in a PlayStation blog post. This shift away from Jin Sakai, the first game’s protagonist, allows for a broader exploration of the ‘Ghost’ identity and its impact beyond Tsushima Island.

One of the major highlights of Ghost of Yōtei is that it will be the first game in the series built exclusively for the PlayStation 5. This transition promises significant advancements in gameplay, graphics, and world-building.

Players can expect an enriched open-world experience with new mechanics and visual fidelity and the introduction of additional weapons, including firearms, alongside the familiar samurai combat and stealth gameplay.

The new chapter in the Ghost series offers fans a fresh narrative and setting while retaining the core gameplay and thematic elements that made Ghost of Tsushima a hit. Fans of the franchise can look forward to exploring new landscapes and combat scenarios as they continue the legacy of the ‘Ghost’ in a feudal Japan setting.
