Sony is reportedly developing a new handheld gaming console designed to support native PlayStation 5 gameplay. The company aims to compete with Nintendo and Microsoft in the portable gaming market.
According to Bloomberg, the project is still in its early stages and may take several years to launch. Sony has not yet confirmed the development.
Nintendo currently leads the handheld gaming sector with its highly successful Switch console, with a next-generation version expected next year. Microsoft is also exploring the portable gaming space, with its Xbox handheld device in prototype stages. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer recently acknowledged that their device remains “a few years out.”
The handheld gaming market has grown significantly, fueled by the popularity of PC-based devices like Valve’s Steam Deck and Asus’s ROG Ally.
Sony’s prior attempt at portable gaming, the PlayStation Portal, was released last year. The device streams PS5 games over Wi-Fi and was initially envisioned as a standalone gaming platform. The rumored new console, however, is expected to play games natively, expanding Sony’s presence in the competitive handheld gaming arena.
