Prices of consumer goods are still rising at Khatunganj, Chattogram, which is considered the largest wholesale market of consumer products in Bangladesh.
However, the price of onion has decreased slightly since the arrival of onions from Pakistan, Turkiye, and Egypt.
Indian onion is sold for Tk 90-100 per kg, nearly Tk 110-115 per kg a few days ago. On the other hand, the price of Pakistani onion at the wholesale market is Tk 82-85 per kg.
Ginger is now Tk 190 per kg, while some wholesalers sell it for Tk 200-202 per kg. According to the wholesalers of Khatunganj, the fluctuation of transportation costs is mainly responsible for the price differences.
Garlic is now sold at Tk 80-90 per kg, Tk 5-10 higher in the retail market. The prices of other spices are somewhat similar.
Prices of rice have yet to stabilize as they have increased by Tk 5-10 per kg.
Khatunganj sees daily trade worth over Tk 10 billion. Recent political unrest in the country, followed by an unprecedented flood, affected the supply chain, prompting price hikes.
