As Bangladesh grapples with a month-long heatwave, the country’s poultry sector reels from staggering losses totaling around Tk160.00 billion, raising concerns of an imminent price surge for chicken and eggs in the coming month, stakeholders have warned.
According to industry insiders, the poultry sector has been hit hard, with daily egg losses ranging from Tk40-50 billion, totaling Tk1.20 to Tk1.50 billion over the past month alone.
Layer farms have borne a daily loss of Tk2.88 billion, aggregating to Tk86.40 billion, while broiler chicken farms have suffered a daily setback of Tk2.40 billion, totaling approximately Tk72 billion in losses over the same period.
These alarming figures were disclosed at a press conference held in the capital city on Saturday, organized by the Bangladesh Cement Sheet Manufacturers Association (BCSMA). The Department of Livestock Services, Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute, Bangladesh Poultry Industries Association, and Breeders Association of Bangladesh also participated.
Moshaddek Hossain, President of BCSMA, emphasized that while the full impact of the losses may not be immediately apparent, consumers could experience the repercussions next month, potentially witnessing upticks in chicken and egg prices.
