Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has fined seven seasonal hide traders a total of Tk 27,000 for causing public inconvenience by parking trucks and vans on roads and engaging in unauthorized transactions of rawhides. This action follows complaints from residents in Dhaka’s Science Lab and Joy Kali Temple areas.
According to a press release by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), the fines were levied after reports indicated significant disruption to public order due to the traders’ activities.
Mohammad Shofiqul Islam, the Regional Executive Officer and Executive Magistrate of Zone-1, led a targeted operation in the Mirpur Road area near Science Lab and Labaid Hospital. Between 3:30 pm and 4:15 pm on Tuesday, five cases were filed, resulting in fines totaling Tk 21,000. This enforcement action was part of a broader initiative to maintain public order during the seasonal trading period.
In a separate operation near the Joy Kali Temple, Mohammad Sakawat Hossain Sarker, the Regional Executive Officer and Executive Magistrate of Zone-5, fined two traders Tk 6,000 for similar offenses.
The seasonal hide trading, which spikes around religious festivals, often leads to temporary but severe public inconvenience. Vehicles carrying hides frequently occupy roads, causing traffic congestion and obstructing pedestrian movement. Unauthorized trading activities also raise concerns about hygiene and order.
Officials stressed that maintaining public order and ensuring the smooth operation of urban life during peak trading times is a priority.
The DSCC has indicated that similar operations will continue throughout the season to prevent further public inconvenience. Traders are urged to use designated trading zones and ensure their activities do not disrupt the daily lives of residents.
