Bangladesh cuts sugar import duty to curb rising prices

by Insider Desk
October 10, 2024

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has halved the duty on sugar imports from 30% to 15%, aiming to lower local prices and curb smuggling.

This reduction is expected to decrease the import cost of raw sugar by Tk 11.18 per kg and refined sugar by Tk 14.26 per kg.

Sugar prices in Dhaka range from Tk 125 to Tk 135 per kg. Industry insiders predict a gradual price drop as existing stocks are sold.

The move, recommended by the Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission, is expected to stabilize prices ahead of Ramadan.
