Bangladesh and Japan are gearing up for high-level negotiations to finalize a comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA).
Scheduled to take place in Dhaka from May 19 to May 23, these talks mark a significant step towards strengthening economic ties between the two nations.
To ensure effective negotiations, the commerce ministry has assembled an 18-member Trade Negotiation Committee (TNC) comprising representatives from various state agencies.
This committee, headed by the chairman of the Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission, will engage in detailed discussions and deliberations to address the EPA’s technical aspects.
The formation of the TNC falls within the framework of the Regional Trade Agreement (RTA) Policy 2022, underscoring Bangladesh’s commitment to fostering regional and international trade partnerships.
With experts from key government departments and institutions, the TNC is poised to navigate the intricacies of the negotiation process and advocate for Bangladesh’s economic interests.
The proposed EPA holds immense significance for Bangladesh, especially as it prepares to graduate from the Least Developed Country (LDC) status in 2026.
The agreement is expected to create a conducive environment for trade and investment by eliminating tariffs and enhancing the investment landscape.
The EPA negotiations stem from the joint feasibility study conducted by Bangladesh and Japan in December 2022, signaling a proactive approach toward deepening economic cooperation. Subsequent discussions, including the joint study group meetings held in 2023, have laid the groundwork for substantive negotiations leading up to the EPA.
