Apple is set to transform its voice assistant, Siri, by integrating ChatGPT with the upcoming iOS 18.2 update, now available in developer beta.
This integration allows Siri to handle more sophisticated user requests, utilizing ChatGPT for nuanced queries beyond Siri’s traditional reliance on internet searches.
The iOS 18.2 update introduces Visual Intelligence, a feature that enables users to interact directly with ChatGPT through Siri. This enhancement will let Siri process complex questions while continuing to rely on Google for more straightforward information retrieval.
Apple has implemented a user confirmation prompt for Siri before directing requests to ChatGPT, although users can disable this setting for quicker responses. Apple remains cautious about potential AI limitations, including inaccuracy and misinformation, and has highlighted these concerns to users.
Apple has also addressed privacy concerns by limiting OpenAI’s access to data for query processing, ensuring no data retention for training purposes. Users with OpenAI accounts can save their request history, though no account is required to use this feature.
The Visual Intelligence feature further evolves Siri’s capabilities by enabling visual interactions through the camera. Similar to Google Lens, this feature allows Siri to analyze objects, recognize scenes, and offer visual problem-solving suggestions.
