Chittagong University (CU) is set to enhance its examination framework by integrating evaluations of students’ social activities, a significant initiative announced by Prof. Dr. Shamim Uddin Khan, the academic vice-chancellor.
This announcement was made during the closing ceremony of the 19th CUDS Debate and Public Speaking Workshop, organized by the Chittagong University Debating Society (CUDS) at the Business Administration Faculty Auditorium.
The workshop, which drew over 700 participants, aimed to cultivate essential debate and public speaking skills among new students. The event featured various segments designed to enhance critical thinking, effective communication, and active engagement with societal issues, including a vibrant cultural program that celebrated Bangladesh’s rich traditions.
Team Cheshta, comprising Niyajur Rahman Sarker, Israt Jahan Smrity, and Suyel Kanti Tanchangya, triumphed in the Bangla debate category during the workshop. Team Irony, featuring Oindrila Barua, Arijit Barua, and Ayesha Akther Tasin, earned the runner-up position.
Oindrila Barua was recognized as a Debater of the Tournament (DoT), and Israt Jahan Smrity was recognized as a Debater of the Final (DoF) in the Bangla debate category.
In the English category, Team Invincible, which included Durriatun Noor and Oindrila Barua, claimed first place, while Team Qubit, represented by Maruf Hossain and Shahriar Sifat, finished as runners-up.
In public speaking, Oindrila Barua took first place, followed by Tanjim Ashraf in second and Ayesha Akther Tasin in third.
The cultural program segment showcased a range of performances that highlighted local art and traditions, fostering a sense of community and celebration among participants. Ahmed Tanjim, Vice President of CUDS, Sadeku Mujtoba Mahi, Media and PR Secretary, and Aheli Ajman, Finance Secretary, skillfully anchored the program, ensuring a well-rounded experience for attendees.
Dr. Mohammad Javed Hossain, Director of the Institute of Education and Research, emphasized the importance of communication skills as essential competencies for student success. He noted that while academic institutions often focus on writing, speaking skills deserve equal emphasis. Dr. Hossain praised CUDS for creating opportunities that foster these vital skills among students.
Prof. Dr. Mohammad Kamal Uddin, the administrative vice chancellor, discussed the dual motivations driving students: the pursuit of knowledge and financial success. He commended CUDS for facilitating meaningful learning experiences and contributing to comprehensive student development.
Prof. ABM Abu Noman, Chairperson of the Department of Law, underscored the university’s need to create an inclusive environment that values academic excellence and community engagement. He reaffirmed CUDS’s commitment to promoting rational discourse and a sense of patriotism among students.
Prof. SM Nasrul Kadir, Dean of the Faculty of Business Administrations, elaborated on the foundational elements of logical debate, including communication, analysis, and critical thinking. He commended students for their active participation and recognized the importance of these skills in today’s complex landscape.
CUDS has a remarkable 27-year legacy of fostering critical thinking and innovation among its members. Over the years, society has played a pivotal role in shaping the debate culture at CU, providing a platform for students to voice their ideas and challenge prevailing narratives. CUDS encourages participants to engage deeply with societal issues, empowering them to think critically and propose actionable solutions.
CUDS has nurtured a generation of articulate and informed citizens capable of leading constructive dialogues through workshops, competitions, and collaborative events. Prof. Dr. Shamim Uddin Khan concluded the ceremony by reiterating the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in effectively integrating curricular and co-curricular activities. He emphasized the need to develop competencies outlined by the University Grants Commission (UGC) framework, preparing students for future challenges.
